When it comes to our children’s safety, few scenarios are as unsettling as imagining them alone near a busy road. It is one of those everyday risks that can quickly turn into a dangerous situation if a child does not have the right awareness, confidence, and decision-making skills.
To better understand how prepared children really are, we explored this concern through our Confident Parent 2026 quiz. We asked a simple but powerful question:
“Are you confident your child would know how to stay safe if they found themselves alone by a busy road?”
The responses from 1,648 parents revealed something many of us may have suspected - but perhaps not fully acknowledged.
The Results Parents Cannot Ignore
The findings were both eye-opening and concerning:
- Only 28% of parents said they felt confident their child would know how to stay safe
- Another 28% were unsure
- A significant 43% said they were not confident at all
This means that over 70% of parents either lack confidence in their child’s ability or simply do not know whether their child could handle this situation safely.
That is not just a statistic. It is a clear signal that more needs to be done.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
Road safety is not a one-off conversation. It is a life skill.
Children today are growing up in a fast-paced, distraction-filled world. Roads are busier, environments are more complex, and independence often comes earlier than we expect. Yet many children are still learning safety through occasional reminders rather than consistent, structured teaching.
The real concern is not just the “no” responses - it is the uncertainty.
When parents say “maybe”, it often means:
- We have had some conversations, but not enough
- We are not sure what our child would actually do in a real situation
- We assume they understand, but we have not seen it in action
And in safety, uncertainty can be just as risky as a lack of knowledge.
Are We Teaching Safety the Right Way?
Many parents do talk about safety, but the challenge is how children learn best.
Telling a child to “be careful” or “look both ways” is important - but it is not always enough. Children need:
- Repetition
- Real-life context
- Opportunities to practise decision-making
- Confidence to act independently
Safety is not just about instructions - it is about understanding, confidence, and behaviour.
How RainbowSmart Supports Real Safety Learning
At RainbowSmart, we recognise that children learn best when they are engaged, involved, and emotionally connected to what they are learning.
That is why we create interactive, story-led content designed to help parents and carers teach essential life skills - including staying safe near roads.
Our approach focuses on:
Learning Through Stories
Children connect with characters and situations they recognise. By seeing safety scenarios played out, they begin to understand not just what to do, but why it matters.
Interactive Decision-Making
Rather than passively listening, children are encouraged to think, choose, and respond. This builds confidence and helps them practise safe behaviours in a safe, guided way.
Supporting Parents and Carers
We provide clear, practical support so you feel confident too, including:
- Simple explanations
- Age-appropriate guidance
- Ideas for reinforcing learning at home
Building Confidence, Not Fear
Our aim is not to scare children, but to empower them. Confident children are far more likely to make safe choices when it matters most.
Practical Steps You Can Take Today
If these results resonate with you, there are simple but powerful steps you can take:
- Talk regularly about road safety in everyday situations
- Practise crossing roads together and explain your thinking out loud
- Ask your child questions like, “What would you do if…?”
- Use real-life scenarios rather than abstract rules
- Reinforce learning through stories, activities, and repetition
Small, consistent actions can make a big difference.
